Minutes of the Meeting of The Strathcona’s Association (Edmonton Chapter) held at the Norwood Legion, Edmonton April 28, 2011
Attendees: 11 members.
1. Call to Order. The Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by the Chair, Dave Biener.
2. Last Post. Three members of the Regimental Family passed away since the last meeting Brig-Gen Kirby, Maj-Gen Ned Amy, ‘Black Jack’ McConnell. It was also noted that Brian Hook a former RCD had passed away. A moment of silence was held for our fallen comrades.
3. New members – There was one new member introduced and welcomed, Brian Miedema. Brian served with the Regiment from 2006-09 as a vehicle mechanic. He currently volunteers with the Historical Vehicle Troop.
4. Guest Speaker. The planned guest speaker was unable to attend.
5. Minutes. Copies of the minutes of the meeting of January 27, 2010 held at the Royal Canadian legion, Norwood Branch were read passed around. A motion for approval was moved by Mike Hogan and seconded by Bill Kingston - Carried.
6. Reports.
a. Chairman’s report.
1) Finances. In the absence of the treasurer the chair verbally reported that we had approximately $840.00 in the bank.
2) Entertainment/Events. No members of the entertainment committee were present. The chair noted that the Brunch planned for March unfortunately was cancelled due to lack of interest. He also listed the upcoming events (see attached list).
3) Hospital. Shad Shadbolt had a stroke in Arizona and is in the ICU at the hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. (Secretary’s ’Note – Shad has returned to Canada and is recovering at home) The chair noted that ‘Busher’ Bennett is recovering from a major operation. Also Ian Barnes is recovering from a hip replacement.
7. Old Business. None.
8. New Business.
a. Membership. Bob Peterson suggested that we track fellow Strathcona`s who are known to us and that do not yet belong to the Association. Another suggestion was made that we offer a free one year membership to all retiring Strathcona`s. A discussion followed. No action taken.
b. Face Book. One member asked if we have a face book site. He then asked how to enter the site. The chair informed all that it could be entered through either Randy Page’s face book account or through the Edmonton Chapter page on the Strathcona`s Web site.
c. Jackets. Robert Copeland had not yet finished his investigation into Association jackets. The chair noted that he should look at the kit shop as they had the patent on the regimental crest and it would be easier for our members to order direct from the kit shop. Ongoing.
9. Upcoming Events.
a. Edmonton.
• 27 May – Melfa River Dinner, Sorrentinos, (Edmonton downtown location).
• 30 June – Wrap-up BBQ –location tbc
• 24 July - Golf day. – we need an OPI
• Calgary Assn Meeting 10 may
• Calgary Golf tournament – 6 August
b. BC reunion – 9-11 September inquiries – contact Bill Wood (250) 496-5579
10. Next Meeting. 1 Sep, Norwood Legion AGM/Membership Drive (ie bring a new member out!)
11. Retirement of Edmonton Chapter President. Dave Biener informed the meeting that the 30 June BBQ will be his last meeting as Chapter Chair. The Vice ,Jim Merritt will take over at that time.
12. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 hrs.
